Bad Moon Rising by Sherrilyn Kenyon
In the world of the Were-Hunters, like stays with like. Species don’t
mix and they definitely don’t
fall in love. But from the moment Aimee
Peltier took in a wounded wolf, her heart wouldn’t listen to what her
head told her.
However, Fang Kattalakis isn’t just a wolf; he is the brother of two
of the most powerful members of the Omegrion: the ruling council that
enforces the laws of the lyncanthropes. His brothers are the wolf
representatives and Aimee’s mother represents the Bear clan. Aimee is
the heir apparent for her species. There is no way these two can ever be
together and they know it.
But when war comes to Sanctuary, the establishment run by Aimee’s
family, sides must be chosen and enemies are forced into shaky
alliances. Aimee is accused of betraying her people, and her only hope
is the one man who believes in her. Yet in order to save her, Fang must
break the law of his people, and that breech could very well spell the
end of both their races.

Writer's Workshop of Science Fiction & Fantasy blog tour
![]() |
About the Book
Writers Workshop of Science Fiction and Fantasy is a collection of essays and interviews by and with many of the movers-and-shakers in the industry. Each contributor covers the specific element of craft he or she excels in. Expect to find varying perspectives and viewpoints, which is why you many find differing opinions on any particular subject.
This is, after all, a collection of advice from professional storytellers. And no two writers have made it to the stage via the same journey-each has made his or her own path to success. And that’s one of the strengths of this book. The reader is afforded the luxury of discovering various approaches and then is allowed to choose what works best for him or her.

Writers
Workshop Excerpt
“Nothing
fills a page faster than dialogue,” the writer said.
There
it is, the blank page or screen, the intimidating and recurring
challenge every writer must face. The temptation is to fill that page
as quickly as possible, to advance the narrative however you can.
Often the easiest way to do that, even for writers who are not
masters of dialogue, is to get the characters talking. A few A few
writers are even bold enough to begin novels or stories with a line
of dialogue, something I don’t recommend unless you possess the
skills of the early Robert A Heinlein, who began his story “Blowups
Happen” with the suspenseful line: “Put down that wrench!”
Orson Scott Card also opened his popular novel Ender’s
Game
with a piece of dialogue that immediately rouses the reader’s
curiosity: “‘I’ve watched through his eyes, I’ve listened
through his ears, and I tell you he’s the one.” Writing good and
convincing dialogue is usually enough of a challenge without relying
on it to hook a reader right at the beginning of one’s story.
Writing dialogue, whatever the difficulties, is generally easier
than, for example, crafting descriptive passages, offering insights
into a character’s
psychology,
creating vigorous and absorbing action scenes, or presenting
necessary exposition in a graceful way.
Writers
who harbor dreams of scriptwriting may be especially prone to fill
pages with dialogue, but others also succumb, partly because dialogue
is a shortcut and a very useful one. Sometimes a few well-chosen
words of conversation can accomplish as much in a story as pages of
description and exposition. There are also a fair number of readers
who are more absorbed by stretches of repartee than by beautifully
and poetically rendered descriptions. (Writers meet these people all
the time; they’re the ones who tell you they skip all the dull
parts, often meaning those carefully wrought passages that cost you
so much effort.) Better just to cut to the chase, or in this case,
drop in on the conversation.
The
strength of dialogue—namely that it can be a useful shortcut—is
also its weakness. Writers who rely too much on dialogue risk leaving
too much out. The writer may hear the characters clearly and easily
envision the scene, but that doesn’t mean that the reader will. (In
a review of a novel some years back, Joanna Russ wrote that passages
in that book seemed to be largely about names drinking cups of
coffee, noticing the designs of ashtrays, or riffing on the
furnishings in a room, the characters were so indistinguishable.) The
beginning writer is likely to produce dialogue in which the reader
will find it hard to tell one character from another. The useful
shortcut can produce a story that is sketchy, in which too much has
been left out.

Interview: The talented Lucian Barnes author of the Desolace series
I am excited to bring you an interview today with the talented Lucian Barnes! LB has written 3 books so far. Desolace,

LB - The idea started with some odd dream elements that I
jotted down upon waking. One day I happened to be looking at some of these notes
and asked myself the eternal question, what if? The story pretty much took on a
life of its own after that.
PT - What attracted you to the horror/paranormal genre?
PT - What attracted you to the horror/paranormal genre?
LB- As long as I can remember I’ve been a huge fan of horror, both in books
and in movies. Paranormal entities such as ghosts, demons, vampires, and
werewolves have always fascinated me. What better way is there to explore the
things that interest you than by writing about them?
PT - Who is your favorite author?
LB - I
would normally answer this question with a resounding, Stephen King, but since I
began to publish my own books I discovered a whole new world of “indie” authors,
in which I found another author that I really enjoy reading, J.H.
Glaze.
LB - Yes, I have. I learned that no matter what
you may think of your work, never be so arrogant to think that you can do
everything yourself. It takes more than just one set of eyes on a manuscript if
you care about the quality of your writing. Grow a thick skin, not all readers
will love your work. You have to be willing to accept the bad with the
good.
PT - Do you have any advice for other writers?
PT - Do you have any advice for other writers?
LB- Yes, I do. Two very
important things to remember...A good editor is the best investment you will
ever make, and never be discouraged from writing by critics. Look for the useful
criticisms and use them as fuel to better yourself and your writing.
PT - How do you react to a bad review of one of your books?
PT - How do you react to a bad review of one of your books?
LB - It really depends on how a
bad review is written. If it contains helpful information about things that
could help me become a better writer I am thankful to the reviewer for pointing
out the areas where my writing needs work. If, however, the review is full of
hateful remarks, to the point of the comments feeling like a personal attack, I
get a little upset. But who
wouldn’t?PT - What are the most important attributes to remaining
sane as a writer?
LB- Is there really such a thing as a “sane” writer? I can’t speak
for all writers, but I feel that any good work of fiction demands a certain
level of insanity on the part of the writer. If the author isn’t willing to
throw themselves completely into the worlds they create for their readers, then
the story isn’t likely to captivate the
reader.
PT - Are there any occupational hazards
to being a novelist?
LB- I can think of a few. Long hours of sitting in one place,
devoid of human contact, often being oblivious to anything happening around
them. I’m sure many novelists could be considered hermits. That isn’t to say we
never go out into the world, because many of us are people-watchers when we go
out in public, but we often work in complete solitude. Other, more normal,
occurrences would be things like soreness and stiffness from sitting in one
place for long periods of time, or getting headaches from staring at a computer
screen all day. If one writes the “old-fashioned” way, with pen and paper, they
would likely suffer from writer’s cramp as well.
PT- How many people have you done away with over the course of your career?
PT- How many people have you done away with over the course of your career?
LB- Eight, but that is before I
add in the fact that one character died twice (once as a human and another as a
vampire) and another that wasn’t really human but a cyborg replica of a
character. Along with these, there have been two horses, a rabbit, and more
zombies than I can count that have met their demise by my doing.
PT - If you were going to commit the perfect murder, how would you go about it?
PT - If you were going to commit the perfect murder, how would you go about it?
LB - I’m sure
that however I would commit such a thing it would undoubtedly be very gruesome,
but if I told you it would no longer be a perfect murder, now would
it?
PT- Can you share a little of your
current work with us?
LB- The following is a small excerpt from the novel I am
currently working on, Innocence Lost.
"Frank! Get out here this instant!" she yelled.
He ignored her and stood tensely waiting for her to come
inside. Seconds ticked by. Still, she would not come in. Frank kept waiting,
poised to bring the hammer down as soon as his mother crossed the
threshold.
Finally, he heard the shuffle of her footsteps. As he
listened, Frank realized the footfalls were going in the wrong direction!
"Fine! Starve then!" his mother grumbled as she walked
away.
Frank broke cover and quickly made up the distance
between them. Before his mother had a chance to turn around, Frank brought the
hammer down viciously, sinking the claw end deep into her skull. Blood sprayed
out in a fine mist, covering his face in spatters of warm, sticky, blood. A thin
red veil washed over his eyes as he watched his mother slump to the ground, the
hammer still embedded in her head.

Bluffing the Devil by C.L. Foster ~ Cover Reveal!!
BLUFFING the DEVIL by CL Foster
Releasing May 2013!
Excerpt:
He slithered his way across the casino floor and instantly his
predacious gaze locked onto me. In a spontaneous act of avoidance, I
burrowed into the crowd a bit deeper and tunneled my way through the
unsuspecting human-shields and headed toward the mock-safety of the
elevators. Not that I am afraid of him, far from it, I just cannot stand
cocky bastards that think they are God's gift to the game. Especially
when it's obvious that the only reason he chats me up so often is he is
trying to learn my strategy and make a place for himself as poker
royalty. Not on my watch, chump. But wait, I am not prey in this
situation! I am never going to be someone's doormat or stepping stone
ever again! Resolve hit me suddenly and I pivoted on my heel quickly,
nearly slamming into his eye-level chest. Man, he was fast! And tall,
geez. When did he get so tall? How had I never noticed that before? Ahh
yes, always sitting at a poker table and only having to deal with his
consuming gazes. This was a new level of freak-out.
"Is there
something I can help you with, Rey?" I said as I craned my neck to see
the tower of man before me, "Or were you on a mad dash to bilk someone
of their life savings or rob some unsuspecting college girl of her
panties and possible virtue tonight?"
"You wound me, truffle." He drawled with his gorgeous Latin accented "r".
Seriously? What is up with everyone and their nicknames for me lately?
"I decided at the last moment to switch to this hotel so I could be
away from the action over at Caesar's and as I was registering I
couldn’t miss your glorious essence calling to me from the crowd."
As if I was "calling" to him? Pssh. As if!
"And I just had to come speak to you and make sure you are doing well. Are you busy? You seemed in a hurry."
Rey could fool most people into thinking he was innocent or sweet or
whatever façade he wanted to wear today but I know poker players and I
know men and he was not fooling me one bit. He always stayed at
Caesar's, which was one of the most important reasons I never did. Had
he followed me? There would be no point in that. I have to stop being so
paranoid.
"I was in a hurry yes, I.. uh.. have a date." It was
sort of the truth. I was planning on going to my room for a nap before
the tournament and was also praying that I would have a few moments with
my Dream Guy, that always settled my nerves and gave me a little
something extra to smile about.
A flash of something crossed
Rey's face. Amazingly, I couldn't decipher if it was anger, confusion,
or some other emotion. Even though I have been training to read people's
faces, actions, words, and other characteristics for years now, he
somehow managed to show an emotion I hadn't seen before. Weird.
Well-played, sir. Game on.

“No! No way! I wasn’t crazy about the dragon, but I draw the line at spiders! There has to be a no arachnids clause somewhere in our calling!”
“Oh, there’s claws all right,” I added, only half listening to her. The long, black legs of the creature stretched out toward us. We pressed our backs up against the wall behind us and began to inch our way to the door. “But I’m more concerned about the mandibles. Look at the size of those things!”
Kendall reached the door first. Her hand circled my wrist. In a blur of wind and speed she flew us out of the dressing room and down the hall where we collided with Alaina. The three of us rolled to the ground in a mass of satin, tulle, and feathers.
“Why are you still here?!” I shrieked and tried to kick myself free from Alaina’s train.
“I wanted to make sure you were oka-aahhhhh!” Alaina’s words morphed into a scream when the spider came into view. Its legs clicked across the wall as it skittered sideways straight toward us.
“Is everything okay? I heard screams.” Vicki, the plump, southern bell storeowner rounded the corner, took one look at the spider and passed out cold.
“Fan-friggin-tastic! Alaina, get her out of here!” Finally free of the mass of fabric, I jumped up and looked around for a weapon. “Where’s a giant rolled up newspaper when you need one?”
Alaina scrambled to her feet, hooked Vicki under her arms, and dragged her through the door that led to the front of the store. The spider eased its way off the wall and onto the floor. Its claws pinched and snapped at the air. Goo dripped from mandibles that chomped hungrily.
Beside me Keni gulped. “Please tell me you have a plan.”
“That depends.” Fear raised the decibel of my voice to a squeak. If that thing lunged there was a good chance I was gonna let loose a girlie scream that went completely against the superhero image. “Do you consider running a plan? ‘Cause that’s all I’ve got.”
“Absolutely!”
We both spun on our heels and sprinted for the showroom. The spider gave chase. I grabbed a rack of prom dresses and knocked it to the ground to slow down the monstrous insect. The spider hissed and easily stepped over the brightly colored pile of sequins and ruffles.
Something whizzed by my head. A zebra print pump slammed into one of the spider’s six eyes and the creature reared back in pain.
“Good thinking, Keni!” I shouted and joined her at the shoe display.
I palmed a sequined stiletto with an exceptionally pointy heel and launched it as hard as I could. It embedded in the spider’s head. The creature stumbled to the side and smashed into the glass display case of tiaras and jewelry. Glass shattered. Expensive jewelry crunched under its pedipalp.
Unfortunately, the blows injured it but neither incapacitated nor killed. The spider raised one back leg and knocked the stuck shoe free. Then it charged. Eight legs clicked across the wood floor in rapid-fire succession toward me. I whipped any object within reach at it. Shoes. Purses. Veils. Hangers. Dresses. Crinoline. Kendall joined in and together we made it rain formal wear on the giant insect. None of it slowed the big bug down at all, but it sure looked pretty.
