Vampire in the Tropics by Jill Elaine Hughes

Blurb

A paranormal erotic novella.

Our heroine, known only as “Beloved,” has had it with vampires. Or so she thinks. After hightailing it out of frozen Poughkeepsie, New York for Mexico in an effort to escape both winter and the loser vampire ex-boyfriends she’s sick and tired of fending off, she finds something she never thought she’d encounter under the blazing tropical sun—a vampire god.

Enter Julio, an immortal Aztec god that blends elements of the Western vampire with the chupacabra. It’s lust at first sight when Beloved lays eyes on him in human form on a white-sanded Mexican beach, and despite all attempts to resist, she finds that at last she has found her destiny as his mate. Wild otherworldly sex ensues that takes them to a parallel universe where the power of the ancient Aztecs blends with modern bloodlust to create a new level of passion, and where Beloved finds a new role as the Chupacabra Queen.

Excerpt

I spent most of my teen and college years running with the vampire crowd, so I know whereof I speak. It was fun at first.  The vampires were all beautiful, and wore the best clothes, and threw the best parties, and got all the good drugs, and sometimes even flew in celebrity entertainers for the all-night shindigs they threw in the woods surrounding Poughkeepsie (that’s how I met Justin Bieber and Kim Kardashian).  All the most popular kids at school were vampires.  They didn’t even try to hide who or what they were, either.  Once upon a time they had to keep their Undead natures a secret, but ever since Twilight came out, being a vampire was cool. And if you weren’t a vampire yourself, being able to say you hung out with vampires was the next best thing when it came to teenage social status.

And I milked my vampire friends for everything they were worth.  Or close to it—I didn’t let them take me over the line into Undeadness myself, of course.  Sure, I’d nick my wrist every now and then and collect some blood in a cup for them that they’d pass around at parties while the mortal kids drank beer and hooch, and sometimes I let them nibble on my neck a little, but that was the extent of it.   And that was good enough for the vampires for many years.

Six years, to be exact.  But starting last year, they wanted more from me than just a little blood and the occasional casual sex session. One of the added bonuses of having sex with vampires is there’s no chance of catching an STD or getting pregnant.
Unless, of course, you let them kiss you.

The sex was great for a long time.  Nothing fancy, no frills, but it got the job done. The vampires’ cocks were cold, but huge and hard, and they knew exactly what to do with them. They knew their way around a clit, too, and never failed to make me come, never once. And no matter how hot and heavy things got, I always stuck hard and fast to the no-kissing rule.  The vampires never seemed to mind that, though.

Until recently.

Something changed with the vampires about a year ago. They wanted me to become one with them.  As in, their vampire blood-lover. As in, the mother of an Undead-mortal hybrid.

As in, they wanted me to start kissing them when we fucked.  Tooth to tooth, fang to fang, tongue to scorching tongue.

I refused.

That’s when the trouble started.

Beauty Secrets by Jill Elaine Hughes

The Great Recession. Reality TV. Luxury cosmetics. And a basset hound named Botox. What do all these things have in common?

They’re all essential story components in BEAUTY SECRETS, a sexy romantic comedy novel, written in a style best described as “Jennifer Weiner meets E. L. James.”

Amanda Brown is a high-flying cosmetics executive for Revina Corporation, the oldest and most venerable cosmetics company in America. She comes from a good "old money" family, she went to Swarthmore, and she lives in a beautiful penthouse apartment in NYC’s Meatpacking District. But she's only successful on the surface----like many New Yorkers, she's also financially overextended. Her parents are dead, her trust fund is gone, and when the Great Recession hammers her company, like millions of people across America she suddenly finds her job hanging by a thread.

Enter George Watson, a hedge-fund manager and self-made man from the Midwest who swoops in from Indiana to rebuild Revina Corporation from the ground up. Even if he fired everyone else at the company, he decides to keep Amanda on for her expertise. The two of them are from different worlds, and they can't stand each other. But that doesn’t stop them from having wild no-holds-barred sex on their first meeting----for reasons neither of them fully understand.

But this is no ordinary corporate takeover, and the unlikely romance between George and Amanda is no ordinary love story. It involves corporate greed, undercover investigative reporters, a sleazy reality TV producer who puts George and Amanda's sexual relationship on national television, dark family secrets----and a dog named Botox.

Excerpt:
Amanda took a brief tour of the store. It had been so long since she’d done her own shopping — she even had her groceries delivered, not that she cooked very often — that the very act of trolling the aisles was a novelty. She walked up and down past racks of shampoo and conditioner (not her brand), bins of empty plastic spray bottles (what on earth were those for, anyway?) and the baby-formula section, finally ending up at a display of condoms next to the pharmacy counter.
Condoms?
Amanda stared at the rows of brightly colored packaging in wonder. She’d never considered the idea that people actually went into stores and bought condoms. All the men she had dated over the past several years produced them as if out of thin air when they were already naked in her bed. Her college sorority house had kept a jar of them in the communal bathroom, though she’d never taken any. Condoms were something that just seemed to appear when required, not something that you went out and purchased like batteries and pantyhose.
Her eyes scanned the racks, noticing that some of the selections on offer featured silhouettes of slender, naked couples in sensual embraces, while others had “special vibrating rings for extra fun.” There were even flavored lubricants and serums that promised to add “heat” and “wow factor.”
Wow factor?
Amanda closed her eyes and felt herself blush. What kind of place was this? She felt like she’d stumbled into some kind of X-rated store on the side of the interstate, not a respectable-if-low-end Duane Reed. How on earth was stuff like this sold out in the open? Shouldn’t it be locked behind a counter or something?
Still, she couldn’t help but be intrigued, even a little titillated. Amanda’s sex life was nil at the moment, not that she cared all that much. But one should always be prepared, right? You just never knew what might happen. She selected a magenta box of Trojans with Vibrating Ring For Extra Fun and a tube of Wow Factor. Then she walked straight to the pharmacy counter to pay for them, too embarrassed to be seen carrying the racy items around the store. Once they were safely tucked in a plain white paper bag (stapled shut, for extra privacy), she headed to the front of the store to conduct a little market research.

Vampire world by Rich Douglas

Blurb/Synopsis

A popular teen is bitten by a vampire during a steamy night of making out with her boyfriend. After the bite, she wakes up in a cruel orphanage in Vampire World, with no memory of her past. She’s left with very little; only fangs, pale skin and a keen desire for blood.

Marissa, who’s named Janice in Vampire World, escapes the ghastly orphanage thanks to Mr. John FreeCut, an old, benevolent vampire who adopts Janice because he wants to foster children he could never have. He says her parents died in a crash. Beautiful, innocent and thrust into an enigmatic world she has no memory of, Janice must face many challenges. The grueling blood hostess job. The multiple stalkers and creepers who are hungry for her and her blood. The dizzying fireball competition. And most challenging, the fact that she doesn’t look or act like a vampire.

Janice is emotionally overwhelmed. Thankfully she makes some friends, including Brett BloodCut. Brett and Janice are immersed in a passionate romance, and Brett helps Janice adjust to her new world by giving her the love, confidence and knowledge she needs to survive as a vampire. Janice finds a way to succeed in such a problematic world. Things go well for Janice, though not for long. A stranger knows the truth about her past.

Slowly but surely Janice discovers the truth that she is being lied to by the ones she loves. She must learn the secret behind TriFang, and ultimately accept the stinging reality that things are not always what they seem. Could the truth ever be so bloody?

My Review

Vampire world is the story of Marisa, a normal teenage girl with good friends, and a hot boyfriend. Everything is great until she is in an accident and wakes up in a strange and terrifying place called Vampire World. She has no memories of her former life, not even her name, but for her the strangest part is that she is now a vampire!  As she acclimates to the frightening new home (and new name), she has to learn how to live and fit in and she slowly learns how to get along.  She has help in her adoptive father, and new friend she meets at her first job. Then in her super sweet and hot boyfriend, Bret. Things get scary when a secret person sends her messages and leads her on missions to find the truth about Vamipre world and her past.

I have very mixed feelings about this book. At times it seemed like a paranormal romance/mystery, but at other times it seemed like a political thriller set in a world of vampires. I enjoyed the story. The romance parts were sweet and I found it fascinating when she was learning to navigate her new life. But the strange clues and secret society weren't really my cup of tea. I can't say I loved this book, but I do feel strangely compelled to find out how the story concludes, so I suppose the author did a well enough job of intriguing me. I give it 3.5 stars.

Haunting Lia by Shannon Eckrich

Blurb
Death is her destiny. But she has other things in mind.

Lia Starr’s life isn’t a fairytale. It’s a reality overflowing with scary monsters, death, and betrayal—a past she left behind when she entered her new foster home. Now, with a loving family, a sister she’s always craved, and relief from the gruesome corpses that tormented her as a child, she’s finally content. Until a freak accident changes everything.

The monsters are back, and their mission is simple: drag Lia straight to their murky hell. When Aiden, an apparition, appears to Lia, she has hope once again. Because Aiden can cross the veil between the spirit world and the earthly dimension, physically fighting off the monsters and sending them back. With Aiden’s determination to keep her safe and his absorbing blue eyes, Lia can’t help falling in love with him. But who is he, and what does he really want? As Lia and Aiden’s relationship deepens, so does the mystery surrounding him.

Once Lia finds out Aiden has traded his soul to save her, she enters the darker dimension, a dimension where nightmares are reality, ready to kick some serious butt. But surrounded by twenty-eight mutilated monsters and a deranged cult leader intent on bringing his dark world to the surface, isn’t what Lia expects. And even worse, she must face her traumatic past in order to destroy them. If she fails, not only will she lose the guy she loves and face certain death, but she will also risk the one thing she can’t afford to lose: her eternal soul.

My Review
This book had me hooked from the first page. Lia is finally happy again. She has a loving foster family and a sister that she would do anything for. One random car accident takes away her sister and shatters her life.  But losing her sister isn't the only thing that happens the night of the accident. That night she starts to see the shadows again. She doesn't know what they are, but she does know they are pure evil and they want her. Lia has been able to see the shadows her whole life. They have haunted her and terrified her and caused her a lot of grief. Soon after her accident Lia meets up with Aiden who is a spirit (though not dead) that helps keep the shadows away. He helps her through her grief and helps her as she finds out the truth about her past and who she really is.

I really enjoyed this story. It was one heart-stopping scare after another with a little mystery wrapped in a romance. I loved Lia. I was able to really feel her pain and suffer with her when she lost her sister. I was able to feel her developing feelings for Aiden and share in the happiness he brought her. I so desperately wanted her to get her answers and solve the mystery. I love it when an author can make you feel like you're watching a movie pay out in your head. When everything is so vivid and they story captivates me to the last page. This story did all that. It was a fantastic read and I give it 5 stars! I recommend this book to anyone who loves romance, mystery, and paranormal/horror.
