Candace Bristol has always been obsessed with comic books, but in a world where the nightly news often mirrors these inked stories, her dreams of becoming a real superhero could actually come true. After being rescued by members of the government’s AdvaNced Genetic EvoLution (ANGEL) Project four years ago, getting recruited for this elite team is all she's wanted.
Now 18, she's finally reached her goal after years of study and physical training, but little could have prepared her for life as a genetic experiment. As though coming to terms with her new ability to manipulate water isn't tough enough, she never expected to be swept off her feet by one of her fellow recruits.
With genetic alteration, the threat of physical and mental instability hangs over every superhero like a shadow. When one of their own tumbles over the edge of madness, Candace will have to choose between protecting the world, and saving the one who holds her heart.

Excerpt-
“Okay, okay, I get it,” she said, throwing her hands up. “I’ll behave. Let’s just get it over with already.”
With
a sigh, he opened the library door and motioned her through. Candace
clutched at her book, hoping she wasn’t making a horrible mistake in
this compromise. Gabe passed her up, making a beeline for the
information desk on the right side of the room. What she saw surprised
her. When she thought of librarians, she generally thought of old Mrs.
DeGroot perched behind her desk. The woman judged every book Candace
checked out as though she were some sort of degenerate in need of Sunday
school and a good paddling. If the person sitting behind the desk in
the Orange City library had been anything like Adrian, she probably
would’ve spent a hell of a lot more time studying there.
He
wasn’t a big guy by any stretch, but solid, with dark hair falling
across his forehead as he bent over a book. She almost giggled when she
saw him smile as he read, clearly lost in a good story.
“Yo,
Adrian!” Gabe said, effectively startling the librarian out of his
reverie. Candace frowned at her cousin as she stopped at his side, but
he ignored her.
“Hey,
Gabe,” Adrian said, glancing at Candace curiously. “Awfully late for
you to be in here. You get put on research punishment again?”
“Ha ha. Nope. We need the copy machine.”
Adrian cracked a smile, glancing at Candace again. She fought back a blush. He was, admittedly, pretty damned adorable.
“We?”
Gabe slung an arm around her shoulders, earning him another foul look. “Me and my cousin.”
“My cousin and I,” she corrected.
“Quit
trying to impress the librarian, Candy Cane,” he shot back. Mortified,
she couldn’t fight off the red in her face this time. “So, can we use
it?”
“You realize that I’m supposed to lock up in twenty minutes,” Adrian said, blessedly granting her a reprieve.
Gabe looked at her. “Whatcha think? Can we do the whole book in twenty minutes?”
She studied the tome in her hands. “You expect me to photocopy a rare book start to finish in under twenty minutes? You are insane. Maybe the first chapter. Now that I know where this place is, I can always come back.”
Gabe looked beyond smug at that. “Uh huh.”
“Don’t,” she growled.
“What book?” Adrian said as he rummaged through a drawer.
She grumbled as she ran her fingers over the pastel pink cover. “The Morania Chronicles, book four. I need to photocopy pages because no way am I giving that book-abuser my copy so he’ll return the third one.”
At this, his head jerked up and he gaped at her. “You have book four?”
She beamed. “I do.”
“Wow,”
Adrian said. “I’ve been trying to get Jackson to return his book for
six months so I could read it. You planning to use yours as leverage?”
“Six months?” she said, dumbfounded.
He nodded. “I think he’s been holding on to it just to spite me.”
Oh yes. She definitely liked this guy. “Then, yeah. I’m definitely considering it leverage.”
Adrian
grinned and led them through two aisles of books, to a room at the
back. “What’s your plan of attack?” he said, swiping his card.
Candace
shrugged. “I’ll give him the first chapter or so. When he returns the
book, I’ll give him more. If he’s nice enough, I’ll give him the rest.
Eventually.”
Adrian chuckled. “That’s harsh. Especially for Jackson. I don’t think that guy’s ever been nice to anyone a day in his life.”
Candace
frowned a little. While Jackson was definitely a jerk, people weren’t
as cut and dry as that. As much as she hated to, she found herself
giving the guy a little leeway. No one was born a complete asshole;
there was always a reason they were the way they were.
As
Adrian turned on the copier, Gabe nudged her forward, at which she
glared at him. “Oh, I don’t think I’ve made proper introductions here,”
he said. “Adrian Hendricks, this little ball of delightful female
vengeance is my cousin, Candace Bristol. Candace, this is Adrian. You
still on to start the program next week, man?”
“Sure am,” Adrian said, filling up a paper tray. “I guess we’ll be cohorts then, Candace.”
She swallowed, suddenly anxious. “Yeah, I guess so. You looking forward to it?”
“Absolutely.” He stood up and presented the copier to her. “All yours. What about you? Nervous?”
Candace squeaked as Gabe nudged her again. She spun on him and hissed. “Would you knock that off? Jesus, Gabe.”
“I didn’t do a thing.” He lifted his hands, trying to look innocent.
“Whatever.”
She stood in front of the copier and lifted the lid, then placed the
book with the front cover face down. “I wouldn’t say nervous, no,” she
said as she closed it and hit the start button. “I’ve been working
towards this since I heard the news about the program. Gabe too, but he
got lucky by being a year older than me.”
“I’d
say lucky is a pretty good descriptor for him,” Adrian said with a
chuckle. “From what I’ve seen, he skates by on that and a strategically
placed smile.”
Looking over her shoulder, she grinned at her cousin. “The game’s up, cuz. He knows all your tricks already.”
The PA system blared to life. “ANGEL Team Pavo, assemble for duty! Shuttle departure in T-minus five minutes!”
“That’s me, kiddos,” Gabe rubbed his hands together. “Time to go bash some heads in.”
Before
she knew it, he was gone. It was almost as if he planned the whole
thing. Welcome to Awkwardsville, population: Candace. What in the hell
was she supposed to do now?
“Pavo, the Peacock,” Adrian said, smiling to himself. “Pretty fitting for that one.”
She snickered. “Totally.”
“Well,
I’m going to start shutting down out there, if you don’t mind,” he
said. “If you have any trouble with the machine, let me know. It’s kind
of old and no one really uses it, so it hiccups every now and then.” He
moved towards the door, and while she wanted to stop him, she had no
desire to live in this weirdness any longer than she had to. “It was
nice to meet you, Candace.” He smiled and left.
Alone
with the noisy machine, Candace turned and set to work. Whether or not
she liked Adrian changed little for her. She was determined not to get
involved with anyone here. Gabe was going to be totally wrong. Maybe
then he could wipe that look off his face.
